Kalandra and Lili Refrain at The Asylum Birmingham, UK 17th September 2024

I’m gonna start this off by telling you that this was my first show in the UK. I wasn't sure what to expect, however The Asylum still wasn't even close to what I thought I was expecting. The venue itself reminded me of or a warehouse. That being said, it did have a smaller more intimate feel.

Lili Refrain was opening. For those of you who have listened to Danheim, Heilung or Wardruna. Lili’s music has a similar vibe, but somehow warmer. Every instrument in her music is performed completely live, she plays each part while recording and loops it. This makes each individual performance unique. It’s not very often you see such a well rounded musician. Her latest album “Live in London Hammersmith Apollo” is out now, you can check it out on most streaming platforms or at https://lilirefrain.blogspot.com/.

Headlining the show was Kalandra. This group out of Norway has some similar music to Danheim and other Scandinavian artists such as mentioned above however would be better compared to Aurora and Skott(also out of Scandinavia). A personal favourite from their set would be “A Brave New World” off of their debut album “The Line.” Inspired by Aldous Huxley’s book by the same name. The song encourages the listener to challenge the status quo and question wether or not they are living in a way that is true to their values.

All in all both artists did not disappoint. I’m personally looking forward to seeing where both artists’ careers take them. Their tour is still going on, so if you’re in Central or Eastern Europe, they still might have tour dates near you.
